How long will therapy take?

Each individual brings different concerns that they need to work on. Therapy cannot always be determined from the start and the focus can often shift to other issues than the ones initially discussed after the sessions have already started. It is important that yourself and your counsellor draw an initial, verbal contract to establish clear goals and possible time needed. The contract will need to be re-visited and re-evaluated as new themes emerge; this process can take several cycles depending on what each individual brings and wishes to address with their counsellor.


I have had both short-term and long-term clients; some have only needed six sessions whereas others over three years. I have had clients who come in to work on a specific situation or emotional turmoil in their life, and once they achieve a level of functioning, insight or clarity about it, we decide together that they can finish treatment. I always re-evaluate with my clients whether therapy is useful or not. We might feel ready to end at some point or see a different type of therapist and I can recommend possible candidates should you wish to do so.
